We have reduced our carbon footprint, made better use of raw materials by substituting them with renewable resources and recycled materials, reduced waste products, conserved valuable natural resources and in several areas substituted materials with those that are environment friendly and bio-degradable. And we’ll continue to explore ways to continue doing this.       Herculan Cradle to Cradle Philosophy   1. Gourd is a fast growing tropical tree, offering a full a renewable raw material for our products. 2. 45% of Herculan products is composed of vegetable oil from the fruit of the Gourd tree. Another application of this vegetable oil is in biodiesel. 3. 45% of Herculan products is Quartz, the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust, and is derived from river sand. This is added to give the product the right workability and to give it strength. Quartz is also used as a raw material for glass. 4. 10% of Herculan products is color pigments.The white base colour, titanium oxide, is also used in toothpastes. Other, natural colour pigments are added to achieve the desired final color. 5. Herculan products have a long useful life. The products are very durable, resilient, light yet strong and elastic. They are also suitable as surfaces for floor heating and thus save energy. 6. At the end of its useful life, the product can be completely recycled. The product can be cut into flakes. After adding a binder they can be re-pressed and used as mats used for sports surfaces, tennis courts and athletics tracks.       Water   At Herculan we are committed to ensuring the sustainable use of fresh water at, as well as control emissions of contaminated water. And wherever possible, we are working to reduce our consumption of fresh water and emission of effluent water.       Land   At Herculan, we go beyond our obligations under environmental laws and regulations, which require us to limit or eliminate environmental effects of disposing certain wastes and substances. We have also ensured that our sites do not become contaminated as a result of our manufacturing processes and are safe for future use.       Air   At Herculan, we are doing everything we can to improve the quality of the air around our plant. That means reducing and controlling emissions caused by our manufacturing processes. To start with, all Herculan products are designed to be non-reactive and inert to the atmosphere and do not emit any gasses after they have been installed. This provides a safe and healthy environment for athletes, sports persons and children who play and practice on our surfaces. At Herculan, we started way back in 2005 we introduced our improved products and processes to reduce emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds [VOC]. We were the first manufacturer of Sports Surfaces to replace all VOCs in our manufacturing process with water based and solvent free substances. Other manufacturers have started this shift only now, and many are yet to complete it. And now we’re going one step further. In our manufacturing facilities, we’re shifting the emphasis away from reducing VOC emissions to reducing the VOC content of our products, thereby tackling the problem at source. We have also reducing emissions that contribute to acidification by dramatically reducing emissions of Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). We are also actively promoting use of hybrid transportation to reduce the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions. Herculan does not make any products that contain ozone-depleting substances (ODS). We have also completely eliminated from our manufacturing plants and offices, ODS.
